Cyclone Murasu Landfall: Storm Crosses Andhra Coast Near Ongole With 110-120 Kmph Winds
News2026-11-03

Cyclone Murasu landfall is under way on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. The landfall process of Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu commenced at 1 am near Ongole, in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, with the observed maximum sustained wind speed of 110 kmph to 120 kmph at the landfall point, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This is the actual crossing that the last two days of forecasts on this blog warned about: the storm was forecast to cross the south Andhra coast close to Ongole, between Nellore and Narsapur, between 11:30 pm on November 2 and 4 am on November 3, and it has now done so, on schedule and at the forecast strength.
As of the 5:30 am update, the landfall process was expected to be completed in another two hours, putting completion at around 7:30 am on Tuesday. The cyclone had been moving at 9 kmph over the previous six hours, much slower than its earlier pace, which stretched the crossing across the early morning. The IMD said a major part of the wall cloud had entered land and the eye was entering the coast, with gale winds of 100 to 110 kmph, gusting to 120 kmph, until the morning. A storm surge of 1.0 to 1.5 metres is likely to inundate low-lying south coastal areas until Tuesday morning, peaking over Bapatla, Krishna and Prakasam.

Cyclone Murasu landfall damage reported so far in Ongole
The first damage reports are coming from Ongole itself. Several thatched houses collapsed and residents were stranded at Samatha Nagar in Ongole, Prakasam district, after heavy rain and strong winds, and the district administration has started rescue operations to evacuate those stranded. Several houses were also inundated in Beeramgunta village of Kothapatnam mandal. Along Kothapatnam Beach Road in Ongole, pushcarts and shop signboards lay scattered after being blown away by wind and rain since Monday night.
The statue of Andhra Kesari Tanguturi Prakasam Panthulu in the Prakasam district Collectorate premises in Ongole collapsed early on Tuesday after a large tree fell on it in heavy rain and strong winds. Reports also describe trees uprooted in Nellore, Prakasam and Bapatla, and several low-lying areas inundated. These are early reports, not a final damage assessment, and officials have not yet released consolidated totals.
Cyclone Murasu landfall: Chief Minister Naidu's 3:30 am review and power supply
After Cyclone Murasu made landfall past midnight, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu held a review with district Collectors and officials at 3:30 am. He directed officials to ensure that people in cyclone-affected areas did not venture onto roads, and to take all necessary precautions to prevent loss of life and minimise property damage. He stressed that people should not come out onto the roads until all obstructions are cleared, drawing on the experience of Cyclone Arnab days earlier, when fallen live wires proved deadly.
On power supply, the news from the review was reassuring. Energy department officials informed the Chief Minister that no electricity poles had fallen and there were no disruptions to power supply anywhere in the affected zones.
Cyclone Murasu landfall: rainfall today and what happens next
Landfall is not the end of the danger, because the heaviest rain follows the crossing. Several districts are forecast to receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday, including West Godavari, Eluru, Krishna, NTR, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Markapuram, Prakasam and Nellore. After landfall, the IMD expects the system to weaken into a depression and move northwest towards Telangana, but that does not remove the rainfall and surge risk for coastal Andhra Pradesh today.
